A Pakistani Christian family was tied up and beaten by a group of Muslims who stormed their home last month looking to force the family to convert to Islam. But when the family refused to renounce their faith, their youngest daughter was abducted, raped and has yet to return home.
The London-based charity British Pakistani Christian Association has come to the aid of the Masih family, a family of 10 Christians caught in the grips of bonded labor (modern day slavery) near the city of Kasur in Eastern Pakistan.
According to BPCA, the family lived in a small home made of mud and had been constantly pressured by local Muslims to convert to Islam, as they were the only family in the neighborhood who hadn’t embraced Islam.
On the night of Sept. 15, a group of six Muslim men and a Muslim woman stormed the family’s home with guns, sticks and metal rods and severely beat members of the Christian family.
The group of intruders hoped that the family’s pain and suffering would cause them to reconsider their prior refusals to convert to Islam. Despite the pain, the family again refused to deny Christ and convert to Islam.
After the family refused to convert, the Muslims grew enraged and tied up and blindfolded all but two of the family members.
As the family consists of six daughters and two sons, the Muslims dragged the family’s 17-year-old daughter, Jameela, and 20-year-old son, Arif, and threw them into the back of a van parked outside of the home.
Arif, who was eventually able to escape out an open door while no one was looking, told BPCA that he and Jameela were taken to an unknown building in an unknown location that he later figured out was a mansion of some sort.
Arif explained that when they arrived at the mansion, they were both tortured separately. Despite the torture, Arif again refused to convert to Islam. While he could hear the screams of his sister, one of the captors told Arif that other Muslim men were taking turns raping his sister and that all he had to do to save his her was embrace Islam. However, he again refused to renounce Christ.
As the sun rose the next morning, Arif took advantage of an opportunity to escape when his blindfold slipped and he noticed that the door was left open with no one around monitoring him.
It took hours for Arif to return home, as he had to walk most of the way before he caught a ride on a rickshaw.
Having been taken so far from home, Arif is not able to recall the location of the mansion that he and his sister were taken too. He also believes that his sister was taken to another location because he did not hear her screams before he escaped the mansion.
The family is now living in a safehouse sponsored by BPCA in Pakistan. That is the same safehouse that another Christian family trapped in bonded labor stayed at while BPCA worked to secure their emancipation.
“This family is deeply traumatized but safe now. We will now begin the arduous task of helping them rebuild their lives in an atmosphere of safety,” BPCA Chairman Wilson Chowdhry said in a statement. “However, the captured daughter Jameela may well never be found and her malicious kidnapping is causing great anguish and despair. [For] Muslim despots [to be able to] kidnap Christian girls with such impunity is a blight on Pakistan’s international reputation.”
According to a 2014 report by the NGO Movement of Solidarity and Peace, as many as 700 Christian girls in Pakistan are kidnapped and forced into Islamic marriages every year. Many times, the police fail to take action and claim that the child left home and entered into Islamic marriage of her own will.
After the attack and kidnapping, the Masih family first went to their Muslim landlord, who not only told them to talk to the police but ordered them to go back to work the day after. The family attempted to file charges with the police. However, local police in Kasur refused to register the family’s case.
The police department was even pressured by Pakistani Sen. Kamran Michael to register the police report, however, Deputy Superintendent Abdul Qayoom Gondal refuses to register the case.
BPCA has hired a lawyer to take on the Masih’s case. According to BPCA, the lawyer was able to reach an agreement for the police to do a preliminary investigation. Thanks to corroborating witness statements, it is likely that a First Information Report will eventually be filed.
According to an application for a FIR, the perpetrators involved in the beating and kidnapping are Ghulam Muhamad, Ilyas Muhamed, Irfan Muhamad, M. Boota, M. Ashraf, M. Haroon and Umraan Bibi, all of whom are relatives.
BPCA reports that the assault on the Christian family occurred after the mother, 50-year-old Mumtaz Masih, was recently harassed by Muslim women in the neighborhood who were again looking to convert her and her family to Islam.
Irritated by the fact that her family kept getting harassed, Mumtaz and the women got into a heated exchange in which Mumtaz allegedly insulted the Muslim women, which could have triggered the violent attacks.
BPCA has launched a petition calling on the Pakistani government to end “the mass abduction, rape and forced marriage of Christians and other minority women, through tougher laws and stronger policing protocol.”
Additionally, BPCA is accepting online donations to aid persecuted Christians like the Masih family.

In Karachi, Pakistan ultraviolent megalopolis, dog culls hardly move anyone, but a handful of animal rights activists and veterinarians are trying to find a more humane way to limit the stray animal population.
In the animal home to the Edhi Foundation, on the outskirts of this city of over 20 million inhabitants, residents are pitiful to see.
This respected charitable organization, known for its ambulances and mortuaries, is one of the few to accommodate, among paralytic crushed cats and donkeys exhausted by a life of hard labor, dozens of abandoned dogs, which will mostly return to the streets once cared for.
These are the lucky survivors: they escaped the last operation as of mass poisoning conducted by the municipality, which gets rid of stray dogs under laws dating from the nineteenth century.
Animal rights are the least concerns of the inhabitants of Karachi, who see dogs as “disgusting”, particularly because of religious prejudice.
Last month, the carcasses of dozens of dogs poisoned in an umpteenth slaughter campaign were gathered under a blazing sun on one of the biggest roundabouts of the city, before being cleared by bulldozers, without ceremony.
“We have a lot of complaints of dog bites, and the most severely affected victims are the children,” is justified Maqsood Memon, part of the municipal health services.
According to the most conservative estimates, there would be at least 35,000 stray dogs in the port city.
And each year there are about 15,000 cases of dog bites, says Dr. Isma Gheewala, who runs a veterinary clinic in an upscale neighborhood of Karachi, Defence.
“Our mindset is such that when we see a dog we throw rocks at it or children pursue it,” she says. “When dealing with an aggressive dog his reaction can be aggressive, and that aggression can have serious consequences.”
Religiosity may explain this attitude only partly. “The Preachers describe the dog a disgusting animal and believe that the killing does not matter,” said an animal advocate, Syed Mustafa Ahmed.
“This is a totally false interpretation of Islam, which merely seeks to prohibit access to places of worship for dogs because they are unclean,” argues Ahmed.
Municipal laws dating from the British colonial era allow the municipality to kill by bullet or poison stray dogs.
But the poisoning is not very targeted, nor is the shooting, said Dr. Gheewala. “Often, the animals don’t die of gunshots, then they’re brought, wounded,” she said.
Even 100% effective, slaughter is “not a correct solution” said the vet Khalid Memon, who works with the Edhi Foundation. “If you want to control the population, simply spay and neuter,” he says.
Last year, three organizations have joined this purpose. The NGO SOS Animal Pakistan (SAP) and a store for pets, Home for Paw and Claw, organized under the aegis of the Edhi Foundation, teams of three people who are doing the rescue of stray animals reported by population.
“In fact, we limit the number of animals in a humane way,” said Ahmed, who heads the joint relief operations. “The main objective (…) is to catch street animals, vaccinate them and sterilize and release them after six days.”
– “They are living beings” –
One team recently found a dog shot in the neck, the animal was entrusted to the clinic of Dr. Gheewala, where his wounds were treated and covered.
The vet says they thus receive six to twelve stray cattle per day, plus pets. His team treats them, castrates or sterilizes them and then they are sent to the Foyer Edhi for animals.
The adoption rate is almost zero, according to Dr. Gheewala, even when animals are adopted, they are often abandoned at the first signs of illness or problem.
Sterilization is important, but harder still to change perceptions, says Ahmed. “Allah created the dog, and he did not create them to be killed,” he said.
“After all, they are living beings,” adds Dr. Memon.

Rescued from her abductors, a Hindu girl was sold for Rs 50,000 by a police official in Sindh province of Pakistan. Three days later, she was forcibly converted to Islam and married to another man.

In another case of human rights abuse of religious minority in Pakistan, a Hindu girl was allegedly sold for Rs 50,000 by a police official in Sindh province. Three days after being sold, the girl was forcibly converted to Islam and married to one, Zafar Masoori.
The victim identified as Anila Bagri had been abducted some time ago in her hometown, Mirpur Mathelo of Ghotki district. She was later rescued by police but her ordeal just began here. One of the police officials, Sajjad Qazi held her back and did not allow her to go home.
GIRL SOLD FOR Rs 50,000
When Anila’s family came to know about her rescue from the abductors, they approached Mirpur Mathelo police. But, Sajjad Qazi refused to let go the girl. He demanded Rs 50,000 from the parents of Anila. This led to a protest by the locals.
But, soon Qazi handed Anila to one of his friends, Masoori in return for money. Local media reported the matter and built up pressure on the administration forcing an inquiry. Ghotki SSP Masood Bangesh was tasked to conduct the probe. Pending investigation, SSP suspended the accused police official.
Meanwhile, amidst recent reports of atrocities on minorities in Sindh, Hindus of the area have staged protests at several places.
“It’s a matter of routine in Pakistan to abduct a Hindu girl, rape her or force her to convert for Niqah. This has been the norm in the country since 1947. They think that Hindus should be driven out of Pakistan to make it a total Islamic nation and Anila Bagri was nothing but a part of the plot,” said Rajkumar, a local.
Mirpur Mathelo was in news a few years ago but for the same reason. A Hindu girl, Rinkal Kumari was allegedly forcefully converted and forced to marry a local guy. Even in recent months, the town was in news for targeted killing of a Hindu boy, Satish Kumar.
Activist Ravi Dawani of All Pakistan Hindu Panchayat said, “Forced conversion of Hindu girls in Pakistan is not new. Such incidents are not about Rinkals, Anjalis, Shobhas or Anilas. It’s not about names. The point is how to find a solution to this problem.”
“There seems to be a conspiracy behind it. They want to disturb the Hindu community so that they move out from here. But, we will stay here. We appeal to the government to protect our children and our family,” Dawani said.

RESPONSE FROM RULING PARTY
Responding to the angry protests over frequent abduction of Hindu girls in Sindh, ruling PML Nawaz MP, Dr Ramesh Vankwani said, “Such forced conversion of girls is against humanity. This must stop.”
“I am tired of raising voice; nothing happens here. Everyone knows what happens in Mirpur Mathelo. Girls are forced to convert and sold for Rs 50,000 to Rs one lakh. Only today, I got a High Court order for the release of one such girl,” Vankwani said.
MIA MITHU FACTOR
In almost all the cases of abduction and forceful conversion of Hindu girls in Sindh, former PPP MP Pir Abdul Haq, better known as Mia Mithu has been the prime suspect in public opinion.
Even in the case of Anila Bagri, locals point finger at Mia Mithu, who is facing 117 cases of abduction and forced conversion of Hindu girls. Many call this former Pakistan parliamentarian a ”symbol of terror’.
MINORITY HINDU AS TARGET
“If mullah had their say, they would force even animals to accept Islam. Their bigotry is giving a bad name for Pakistan in the world,” noted Pakistani journalist Najam Sethi was quoted as saying.
Deputy editor of Awami Awaz, Asad Chandiyo said, “Forced conversion of Hindu girls is very common in Sindh. Earlier, only people like Mia Mithu did such things, now even police are doing it. Chances of getting justice for such victims are very bleak.”
