Maury County Director of Schools Chris Marczak has asked parents concerned about a seventh grade social studies class on the history of Islam to discuss their questions in a Sept. 17 meeting with district teachers and administrators.
“If we are truly going to Grow Maury County together, then we need to openly talk and discuss about what we want to emphasize in our county,” Marczak said in anoon Thursday statement to district parents.
“I encourage you to talk with your children, talk with your teachers, and talk with your principals. We are here to help your children be prepared for Life.”
The issue arose over new state-mandated standards on middle school social studies about early American history. The standards were developed two years ago and implemented in the 2014-2015 school year.
A Spring Hill Middle School parent complained after seeing a school project her daughter had created featuring the Shahada, or Five Pillars of Faith in Islam: prayer, almsgiving, fasting, pilgrimage and creed.
The creed pillar is known in Arabic as “Shahada,” and in transcribing it students were instructed to write, “Allah is the only God,” said parent Brandee Porterfield.
“These [papers] belong to my daughter in seventh grade at Spring Hill Middle. They have studied Islam for three weeks, but skipped the whole chapter on Christianity because it’s not in the state standards.”
Porterfield said her daughter’s teacher “was not happy about it,” but told the parent she must teach to the standards.
“She said this will be on TCAPs. Both her teacher and Principal Shanda Sparrow said students would not have to write the Shahada again.
“The teacher approached my daughter before class and was very understanding. My daughter told her she would not recite or write the Shahada or anything saying ‘Allah is the only God.’ The teacher said she wouldn’t have to.”
During class time on Tuesday, Porterfield said the teacher verbally asked students about the five pillars, “And the students were reciting the Shahada.”
Marczak said Thursday the section covers early American History, world history early civilizations to the Roman Empire, Middle Ages through exploration of the Americas, and colonization to reconstruction of the Americas.
“Our teachers work together to make sure that our students are learning what is expected through the Tennessee academic standards. For this last section on the Islamic World this past week, our educators had students complete an assignment that had an emphasis on Islamic Faith. The assignment covered some sensitive topics that are of importance to Islamic religion and caused some confusion around whether we are asking students to believe in or simply understand the religion.
“It is our job as a public school system to educate our students on world history in order to be ready to compete in a global society, not to endorse one religion over another or indoctrinate.”
Marczak said he has discussed the parental reaction with Maury County Commissioner Donna Cook and District 64 State Rep. Sheila Butt about the state standards for the curriculum.
Cook said she has asked the matter be placed on the Board of Education’s Sept. 10 meeting so citizens can relate their concerns.
Marczak said the Tennessee State Standards on World History in 7th grade require students be taught “historical facts and our students are required to write as part of learning (being able to cite evidence from text). Teachers don’t encourage belief in any certain religion over another. We have students of all faiths in our classrooms and all students cover each world religion.”
“My child was required to write ‘Allah is the only God’,” parent Joy Ellis said. “This is a seventh grade state standard, and will be on the TCAP. Christianity was completely skipped and is not a standard. I didn’t have a problem with the history of Islam being taught, but to go so far as to make my child write the Shahada, is unacceptable.”
The ‘Shahada’ is often seen on the Black Flags of Muslim Terrorist Organizations, as seen below…
Marczak said the teachers were covering world history facts of Europe, Southwest Asia, Africa and Asia in the areas of geography, government, culture, economics and religion” and suggested that parents discuss the matter with teachers at scheduled Sept. 17 parent-teacher conferences.
However, Maury resident Bob Crigger said Marczak’s remarks “skirt the real issue” and “shows a callous attitude.
“It did not address the main concern of the parents,” Crigger said. “The parents’ concern is not ‘social studies-world history content related to Southwest Asia culture and religion.’ They are concerned that their children are being taught Islam in the classroom.
“The MCPS refused to utter the word ‘Islam,’ which means they ignored the concerns of the parents, and it shows a callous attitude toward the parents. Not only did they skirt the real issue, but they told the parents to go to the principals of the various schools if they have any further questions.”
Crigger said pointing parents to their children’s principals is part of “a political shell game.”
“Principals are not the policymakers in the MCPS. They execute the polices set forth by the school board and director of schools. It is the school board and the director of schools who make the policies. In fact, they are the ones who have the authority and power to settle the issue of Islam being taught in the MCPS. All they have to do is delete the curriculum from the classrooms.
“Instead of being responsible and solving the concerns of the parents regarding Islam, the school board and the new director of schools is passing on their responsibility to principals. We are not going to put up with this political shell game. The government’s first priority is to protect its citizens. These are our children and we want them protected.”
Crigger has asked MCPS for a town hall meeting with the school board and director of schools.
“We want a large venue with open mics on the floor, and proper time for each parent and resident to speak. This way they can know the exact concern we have, instead of hiding our concerns with the politically correct statement they made.”
– Here is the complete statement issued at noon Thursday by Marczak:
Message from Director Dr. Marczak: By now, many of you have heard what is taking place with concerns to the teaching section of middle school social studies. The standards that we have in place from the State of Tennessee are newer standards that were developed in 2013 and implemented last year, 2014-15 school year. In middle school, the standards have us address early American History, world history early civilizations to the Roman Empire, middle ages through exploration of the Americas, and colonization to reconstruction of the Americas.
Our teachers work together to make sure that our students are learning what is expected through the Tennessee academic standards. For this last section on the Islamic World this past week, our educators had students complete an assignment that had an emphasis on Islamic Faith. The assignment covered some sensitive topics that are of importance to Islamic religion and caused some confusion around whether we are asking students to believe in or simply understand the religion. It is our job as a public school system to educate our students on world history in order to be ready to compete in a global society, not to endorse one religion over another or indoctrinate.
I encourage all Maury County parents to be their child’s first and main teacher. It is our job as parents of our own children to instill in them the beliefs of our individual households. It’s important that we establish a good working relationship with our children’s teachers and schools so that when there are questions or concerns, teachers and principals are the first line of asking. If we are truly going to Grow Maury County together, then we need to openly talk and discuss about what we want to emphasize in our county. I encourage you to talk with your children, talk with your teachers, and talk with your principals. We are here to help your children be prepared for Life.

US attorney Bill Killian claims that anti-Muslim speech violates Muslim’s Constitutional rights. Therefore, he argues, it should be illegal and punishable by law.
Killian said, “We need to educate people about Muslims and their civil rights, and as long as we’re here, they’re going to be protected.”
At this time, Obama’s DOJ is working to determine what exactly, is considered illegal speech against Muslims. Guidelines and specific laws are expected to come soon.
Currently, the government is not allowed to prevent speech that is hateful towards a religion, unless a specific threat is made. To prevent speech that is hostile towards a religion is a violation of the First Amendment. The government is allowed to urge people to not engage in such speech — it just cannot punish people for doing so.
If the DOJ does decide to make anti-Muslim speech punishable by law, it could mark the beginning of significantly increased government power.
Here is U.S. Atty. Bill Killian earlier this year in Tennessee:
Editorial Footnote: This site should be unaffected by any legislation that would ban ‘Anti-Muslim’ speech. We do not speak against Muslims, but rather against the ideology of Islam.

Springfield High School didn’t miss an opportunity to display and essentially express their desire to show their tolerance for an ever growing diverse community at a recent open house for parents and returning public school children.
On display on the freshmen hall wall of the Robertson County TN school, the 5 Pillars of Islam were pasted “up and down” the hallway proclaiming the “rules” to be a good student of Islam, much in the way the 10 Commandments direct Christians.
The 5 Pillars were youthfully drawn onto a white cardboard canvas complete with definition and meanings of the 5 pillars of Islam. Interestingly enough the 5 Pillars contained what is often considered the 6th Pillar called Jihad and was missing Zakat (Charity) or the tithing pillar which most religions consider very important, more so than Jihad or Holy War.
I was informed of this display from a very concerned parent who sent me a picture of the “poster” displaying the 5 Pillars and said they were all over the place and was very concerned that one “religious” set of rules had been tolerated and posted on school walls and one was not.
The only problem, to date, is the 5 Pillars stayed and the 10 Commandments came down.
The Jihad reference is a very strong one as many believe it along with Zakat or charity is helping fund many of the terroristic attacks around the world against Christians and believers of Christ.
Simply put, Jihad is war against the non believers, the kafir, you and me, and promotes death as a certain end if you fail to convert to Islam. And our schools and leftist groups are not saying a word and allowing this to be promoted in our TN public schools.
It is evident that the only religion allowed to express their religion and political clout in public schools are the Muslims and the teachings of Islam.
This is indoctrination through prostelyzation to the Kafirs, our children.
If they can have this type of access to our children all or none should be able to do the same.
Allowing one religion to be promoted in our public schools and not any others shows a deliberate bias and deliberate attempt to make one religious concept acceptable over another.
A certain hypocrisy is displayed and begs for at least questions to be asked as to why this has been allowed in these “politically correct” times and what is their motivation?
It is extremely obvious that while one side is attacking the foundations of Christ, it is allowing and ignoring “other” representation of religious display.
As seen in the references provided below there are mutliple attempts, successfully I may add, by the extreme left to squash the display of any Christian literature or historical foundational documents from our rich national heritage. Religious display other than Christian seems to be acceptable in our public schools.
The cry for tolerance of all religions is quickly being discovered to be a push for preference while softening or eliminating the evangelical voice in our state and nation.
At what point does it become acceptable to condemn one religion and all it’s tenets for the promotion of another. Where is the outrage by Christians on this subject who have been silenced and their beliefs replaced with the 5 Pillars of Islam.
The driving force behind acceptance comes when the cry for tolerance becomes intolerance and vica versa. As one wise person has said before, “what is good for the goose, is good for the gander!”
How does this foundation of Islam get to be displayed and the foundation of the Christian faith, the 10 Commandments get attacked and ordered removed by numerous lawsuits forcing their removal.
I believe school leaders and teachers are joining the PC crowd so as not to offend, unless of course you are Christian.
Meanwhile, the 5 Pillars of Islam doesn’t even raise a bleep on the radar screen of the ultra liberal groups like the ACLU and The Freedom From Religion Foundation crying for their removal, not a word.
These same groups, at the drop of a hat repeat the mantra that our school or public institutions must be free from religion and influence of the church. “We must separate Church and State”, yet remain silent when Islam or others push for the same.
Its obvious to me this movement is not about separating Church and State and freedom from religion, it’s about removing God from our schools and dismantling the Christian movement. This effort by the left is and always has been about that. It is now being revealed.
If the measuring stick was religious influence on our children the leftist and the mainstream media would have made a bee line toward removing the 5 Pillars of Islam from our public schools just as they have the 10 commandments. But it is not, and will not!
To me, the first pillar of Shahadah, there is no god but Allah and Muhammed was his messenger is the most powerful “religious” statement that is going unchallenged. To ignore the call for Jihad in the hallways of our TN public schools should not be tolerated in any civilized setting.
‘Education practice wouldn’t last 10 seconds if kids told to dress as priests’
Another school has been “teaching” Islam by having students study and learn Muslim prayers and dress as Muslims, and a lawyer who argued a previous dispute over this issue to the U.S. Supreme Court said such methodologies wouldn’t “last 10 seconds” if it were Christianity being taught.

These terroristic expressions of faith and duty by Islam should be condemned by all, including the Robertson County school board, Springfield High School Principal, parents, churches, congregations and teachers inside the system.
Religious freedom, if you believe it, should be applied here in great force to any god or religion! Right?
Showing bias toward one religion and not another shows hypocrisy with a good heap of partiality for one “religion” over another severely weakens their argument that religion should not be in our school system. So, the logical solution and I’m playing the devils advocate, its all or nothing.
In case you have never seen or reviewed the pillars, here they are. This is what is being displayed in our public schools in TN as proven by many photos taken of their display and parents statements of kids inside this school system.
The 5 pillars of Islam:
1. The Shahadah
A statement of belief: I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and I further testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Compulsory prayers that are performed five times a day.
The practice of giving, based on accumulated wealth, and is obligatory for all Muslims who can afford it.
Fasting during the month of Ramadan.
Make pilgrimage during the Islamic month of Dzul Hijjah in the city of Mecca once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able to perform it.
Islamic campaign against nonbelievers:a campaign waged by Muslims in defense of the Islamic faith against people, organizations, or countries regarded as hostile to Islam
Wanna see the disparity and obvious hypocrisy?
Please glance at these articles below then look at the “flip side” and see the counter offer by the left to drive the teachings of Islam mainstream in our public schools and the lefts silence and lack of resistance to this religious display.
A note worthy of mentioning is in my exhaustive research I found no item or lawsuit by the ACLU or FFRF demanding that the 5 Pillars of Islam be removed from any venue. I did find many supporting and even large corporations promoting their display.
The hypocrisy and one sided approach to “freedom from religion” is very intriguing.
